The first thing to be penciled was always the dialogue. That way I could figure out how much space was needed for both words and pictures. The following strips didn’t make the cut, but show the penciling stage before inking took place.
Since the main character doesn’t move in the first three panels, I had to draw him over and over and over again. Nowadays if this were to be done digitally, it would be a simple copy and paste job.
Here you can see the lines laid out across all the panels for the dialogue. This was done before any character drawing took place in order to make sure the spacing of the words was correct and there was enough room for the characters.
Some of my favorite strips to create were ones without any words at all, like this one. As someone once told me, hair is wasted on the youth.
